What happens when you get 16 women together who have the passion for construction and making a difference? You have Women Build. National Women Build Week held annually challenges U.S. women to devote at least one day to the effort of eliminating poverty housing.
The 2010 project in North Minneapolis marks the 14th home to be completed by groups of Twin Cities’ women volunteers since the local program’s inception in 1992.
On July 29th in the 92 degree heat our team of volunteers worked on installing 1,184 square feet of sheetrock, laying the cement foundation wall for the detached garage and installing corbels around the home.
Through this experience our team of women were encouraged to have fun while making a difference for a family in need of safe affordable housing. The revitalization of this home brought attention to a neighborhood that might have not otherwise been noticed.
Despite the heat at the end of the day we all agreed that we felt empowered. Some of women on our team learned how to use power tools and hammers for the first time, as well as understanding the importance of safety on a construction site. Many of us have a new found appreciation for the builders and contractors who truly are craftsmen and women in the construction field.
We know that together we can make a difference, one family at a time.
